RIM Sports Field Project Update: June 28, 2010 Jun 29, 2010

Status of Work:
  • Artificial turf installation will commence the second week of July for a period of four-six weeks
  • The turf is undergoing extensive quality testing; both lab tests and field tests will be completed before the fields can be programmed
Waterloo’s new premier sports-field facility is underway. In May 2009, City of Waterloo staff applied for a $4.9-million federal-provincial stimulus funding grant to build an improved sports-field facility at RIM Park. The grant application was successful and the Building Canada Fund grant was announced in late June 2009.

This good news story will benefit community sports for years to come. The RIM Park sports fields, east of University Avenue, are being upgraded to a premium outdoor field facility.

Project Features:
  • Two international size artificial turf fields
    • North Field:
      • Soccer layout size = 330’ x 223’ (19’ runout)
      • Canadian football layout size = 330’ x 195’ (plus 60’ end zone)
    • South Field:
      • Soccer layout size = 360’ x 223’ (16’ runout)
  • State-of-the-art lighting on all six fields (two artificial and four existing natural turf fields)
  • Comfort features for players and spectators including shaded player benches, grassed spectator berms, on-site washrooms and a large shade canopy for relief from sun and rain
  • Enhancements for the community including a one-kilometre walking/running loop and an enhanced accessible children’s playground
  • A site entrance zone with player drop-off zone and meeting place complete with public artwork
  • The project also features environmental best practices including a state-of-the-art water harvesting system that collects and re-uses rainwater
