RIM Sports Field Project Update: June 14, 2010 Jun 16, 2010

The RIM sport field construction is progressing, with a few delays due to recent rainfall in June.
  • The site servicing (water, storm/sewer) is completed.
  • The irrigation system and water harvesting systems are complete and temporary irrigation is now available for the the natural turf fields (7,8,9,10)
  • The conduit for electrical is complete, and conduit has been installed for a future potential score clock and for additional electrical for events.
  • The substantial rainfall recently has provided opportunity to test the field drainage. Gateman Milloy and the site inspector report that the fields are draining well.
  • Gateman Milloy has substantially completed the bases of the fields with the geotextile and clearstone in preparation for concrete curb placement.
  • Two sections of concrete curbing have been completed, with completion of the work being rained-out.
  • Covered players benches have been ordered, which will be placed on the two artificial turf fields.
The artificial turf is being supplied and installed by IC Improvements (IC Green Pro 52 (XP Grass) with a 100% crygogenic rubber infill. The turf has been tested by an independent testing lab (Labosport, Canada) and the testing results confirm that the turf is within the standard requirements of IATS (International Artificial Turf Standards) which is the equivalent to FIFA 1 Star lab testing standards. The turf is scheduled to be installed in July/August, at which time field tests will be conducted as the final step in assuring that the fields meet the IATS and FIFA standards. Note that the City of Waterloo is not pursuing the purchase of a 'certification' by FIFA, which is required for fields that wish to use the FIFA name. The fields will have permanent markings for soccer.

The project includes a central washroom facility and a large outdoor canopy for shelter from sun and rain. The central area will also include a variety of spectator viewing areas of all of the fields, both the new artificial and the 4 existing natural fields. The new building will include the opportunity for an outdoor concession area and outdoor spaces for tournament headquarters.

In the fall the original playground structure will be reinstated in a new location with improvements as an accessible playground.

City staff reviewed the potential to light the natural sport fields (now) by installing a temporary electrical transformer. The cost was however restrictive, therefore, the lights will not be available for use until the washroom building, which includes the electrical room is completed.

The project includes a public artwork to be placed at the main entrance zone to the fields. Four options for the artwork will be on display at RIM Park Sportsplex for two weeks from June 15th - 29th. Stop by and comment on your preferred artpiece.

Construction will continue throughout the summer. It is anticipated that the new artificial fields will be substantially completed in late August, however, the washroom building, which houses the electrical/mechanical room will be under construction into the Fall months.

An Official Ribbon cutting/opening for the completed facility is being targeted for early October 2010.
